Yi Min Teo - Your IBD and GI Dietitian
so good to meet you :)
she/her/hers | MS, RD, CNSC
Meet your Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis, GI Dietitian. I am a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and owner of Yi Min Teo Nutrition – a virtual private practice specializing in digestive health and culturally-sensitive nutrition counseling.
My Story
This might sound cliche, but it started off with me trying to find a way to make a career that would allow me to live out my passion for food on a daily basis. Cooking and eating delicious food always gave me so much joy. On a deeper level, it facilitated connection with my family and loved ones (especially whipping up family meals with grandma in the kitchen), my cultural heritage as a Singaporean Chinese, my community and health.
During my time as an inpatient clinical dietitian, I realized that many IBD patients want to know about nutrition. Every single patient would ask: “What can I eat?” But there was little guidance and support from medical teams beyond “let’s get your diarrhea under control and send you home”, or “diet does not matter for managing your disease”.
The frustration and overwhelm from the rollercoaster of symptoms, healthcare maze and lack of access to nutrition support is all too much.
I am here to support and empower you through your IBD/GI journey, with the goal to help you confidently enjoy your favorite foods again without fear.
As a person of color, I realized that many recommendations on the nutrition handouts were not always applicable to my culture and the way I eat. I was not alone in this experience. Patients from various cultural backgrounds echoed the same thoughts and challenges as they struggle to implement health advice from their providers.
The lack of IBD and GI-focused nutrition information plus culturally-appropriate nutrition care sent me down the rabbit hole. Seeing how nutrition has the power to improve the quality of life of IBD and GI patients, as well as supporting my own family members through bowel surgeries and living with ostomies, I made it my mission to fill these gaps in nutrition care.
Everyone’s welcome here.
I founded my practice with the goal to fulfill the unmet needs for IBD and GI nutrition care beyond hospital walls, especially for patients from diverse cultural backgrounds. My goal is to empower all IBD and GI patients to live their best life again with the support that is actually needed. Accessible specialized IBD and GI nutrition care should be a necessity, not a privilege. Especially for communities of color.
My Approach and Focus:
Evidence-based. Food first!
Personalized, collaborative care is the best care. No one-size-fits-all here.
